An Amazing winter wonderland family ski trip to the Beitostolen ski resort in Norway

Norway has a reputation for being horrendously expensive… Not the case, if you are careful (don’t drink the bar dry) go self catering or half board you can experience this magical winter wonderland on a budget. We think this is a perfect resort for families looking for their first taste of the snow, it has a lot more to offer than just skiing with activities such as ice fishing, sleigh rides, husky tours and kids snowmobiles all available in a compact family friendly resort. We’ve visited 3 times over the years and there has always been snow outside the front door and unlike some of the sprawling mega ski resorts most of the hotels here are located within 500m of the ski lifts and on one street. Our Kids (10 &13) were finding their own way up the slopes on the second day. The age limit for the children to ride alone on the ski lifts is 10yrs and most of the runs end up 100m from the Radisson blu where we were based, our two loved the freedom of being able to explore the slopes by themselves!

Accomodation : The Radisson blu 1/2 board would be our pick if you want a comfortable base with easy access to the ski lifts, a giant heated pool, very well equipped gym and great food (the Christmas buffet is legendary in the area)

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative we have also stayed at the Hovi cabins on a self catering basis. Although a little further from the lifts it’s still an easy walk and you can usually ski back to the front door. The cabins are traditionally decorated, read that as slightly dated, but cosy with 2 bedrooms, open plan kitchen/dining/lounge with a log fire. The entrance area by the front door has plenty of space to hang your ski gear and also doubles as a drying room with it’s own temperature control. There is a good sized supermarket, wine shop and small shopping mall directly opposite the cabins.

For some families a winter holiday is not all about the skiing  and thats where this friendly resort come in to it’s own! Take a wander down to visit the guys at BeitoAktiv they do most of the activities as well as the ski lessons.

Getting there:

Crystal Ski have packages to suit your budget flying from Gatwick to Fagerness (45min transfer) We have seen some amazing deals for the first week of the season. They start flying the week before Christmas

If you are feeling a little more adventurous you can catch the Bus you can fly to Oslo and catch the Valdesxpressen bus that stops just outside the Radisson (and just below the ski lifts!)

You sound very exotic and way more insenettirg than myself. I am very very normal (aka boring sometimes) and try as I might, stay that very law abiding never even park in a dodge spot citizen. My husband has lots of cool tattoos though and would love more.Mel
